Hippopotamuses

Hippopatamuses portrayed in African art: Singles, cows with calves, pairs, and groups.

The African hippopotamus is an animal that spends a great deal of time lolling around in rivers and other bodies of water.  The soft round shape of hippos and the fact that they seem to spend their time lying down make them a natural for carving out of the softer Rapoko stone, and in their favorite supine position. We occasionally get some Serpentine and Verdite pieces and even the odd standing or even sitting hippo.
